US Lawmakers Push to Ban Chinese AI Chatbot DeepSeek from Government Devices

Google’s AI Super Bowl Cheese Ad Stirs Controversy with Gouda Gaffe
Google’s Super Bowl ad featuring a Wisconsin cheese shop sparked debate after AI-generated text incorrectly claimed Gouda accounts for "50 to 60 percent of global cheese consumption." The error, flagged by an X user, highlights ongoing issues with generative AI, which often produces inaccuracies. Google clarified that the statistic came from multiple websites but has since updated the ad, removing the claim following advice from the shop owner. This incident underscores the challenges of integrating AI into products as Google races to compete with OpenAI, Meta, and Chinese tech giants.
Politico CEO Refutes Trump’s Claims: "It’s Capitalism, Not Subsidies"
Mathias Döpfner, CEO of Politico’s parent company Axel Springer, has firmly denied claims from former President Trump that Politico received federal subsidies, calling the accusations "absolutely wrong." He clarified that Politico operates purely on a capitalist model, offering both free content and premium services through Politico Pro, a subscription-based platform primarily used by private companies and a small fraction of government agencies. The misinformation stemmed from false assertions that the outlet received over $8 million from USAID, prompting the White House to announce subscription cancellations. Döpfner emphasized that government purchases are standard business transactions, not subsidies, likening them to subscriptions for other services like Bloomberg Terminals. Politico reiterated its 18-year history without any government funding, urging facts to prevail over baseless political narratives.
US Lawmakers Push to Ban Chinese AI Chatbot DeepSeek from Government Devices
US lawmakers are proposing a ban on the use of DeepSeek, an AI chatbot developed by Chinese startup High Flyer, on government devices due to national security concerns. Representatives Darin LaHood and Josh Gottheimer plan to introduce legislation mandating government agencies to remove DeepSeek and related apps within 60 days. This move follows DeepSeek’s recent release of an advanced AI model, R1, which rivals top American models despite being cheaper and more efficient, raising fears that the US could fall behind in AI technology. The proposal echoes previous efforts to restrict TikTok over concerns about data access by the Chinese government. Security experts warn that China’s cybersecurity laws require companies to provide data upon request, increasing privacy risks for users. Similar bans have already been implemented in countries like Australia, Italy, and Taiwan.
Federal Employees Face Tough Private Sector Job Market Amid Workforce Downsizing
The Trump administration is encouraging federal employees to transition to private-sector jobs as part of efforts to shrink the government workforce, offering deferred resignations with pay through September. However, economists warn that the current job market is stagnant, with fewer opportunities and longer job hunts. While workers with cybersecurity skills or security clearances may find roles quickly, those in administrative positions face stiff competition. Additionally, fewer remote job options and the older average age of federal employees add to the challenges. Despite these hurdles, experts advise using the extended paid leave to network, upskill, and improve job marketability. A judge has temporarily paused the resignation deadline amid legal challenges from unions questioning the plan’s legality.
